Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are Back for Three ‘Avatar’ Sequels

Along with a surprise guest.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have reprised their roles as the Na’vi couple in James Cameron’s next three sequels to “Avatar.” The first of the trilogy of sequels will hit the silver screen in December 2016.

The films will all be produced back-to-back, something seen done by Director Peter Jackson with the ongoing Hobbit trilogy. By Cameron doing using this technique, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 will hit theaters in December 2017 and December 2018.

The plot of the films are heavily under wraps, but what is known is that Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldana) now have children. Another detail that’s known is that Stephen Lang was the first to sign back on and will resurrect his role as the brute Marine Colonel Quaritch from the first film. How Cameron and his team find a way to bring his presence back is up for speculation, nonetheless, it is nice to see that the series has a “Big Bad” of some sort.

“Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul…”

On the topic of renewing deals, Cameron says, “Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they’ll be returning with us to Pandora.”

Cameron and Jon Landau will produce through their Lightstorm Entertainment banner.
